Assaad Feghali

Portrait of Assaad Feghali

Industrial designer.
Beirut, Lebanon.

Assaad designs furniture, lighting, and objects with an attention to materials, form, and the processes through which things are made.

After graduating from Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan and working in Montpellier, he returned to Beirut, collaborating with studios and organisations across the Arab World, Europe, and the US, including Bokja, SPOCKDESIGN and MDM Middle East.

Research and intuition.
A conversation.

The practice begins with an appreciation of how materials behave: how they bend, bear weight, respond to heat, develop texture, and change over time. These qualities guide both construction and expression, letting a piece’s character emerge through the process of making.

Research provides a foundation, while sketches, digital models, and experimentation make room for discovery. Decisions need to feel right and be informed. A detail can invite a closer look, suggest a gesture, or introduce a subtle sense of curiosity.

Objects carry something of the people who make them, and continue to grow with those who use them. This relationship between a piece and its life informs the practice across furniture, lighting, and objects.

Alongside industrial design, Assaad works in artwork fabrication and the specialised installation and repair of large-scale artworks. Outside the studio, illustration, rock climbing, cooking, and music offer other ways to observe, explore, and experiment.

Pleasure, humour, and play are part of this process. An unexpected association, a teasing detail, or a gesture can open a relationship with a piece. The ambition is a connection that develops physically, emotionally, and intellectually, with room for deeper personal resonance.

Beliefs behind the practice

The drive.
Why I do things.

01 Curiosity as a starting point

Explore how materials, systems and people behave, and what relationships can emerge between them.

02 Moments of discovery

Leave room for curiosity, recognition, pleasure, and surprise. An intuitive feeling can precede an explanation. Making can become an act of discovery and self-reflection.

03 Pleasure, humour and play

Leave room for unexpected associations, a tease, creative bursts, and enjoyment of the work and the people involved.

04 Truth in process

Value materials for what they are, and seek transformations that feel genuine to their properties and the processes used.

05 Acknowledgement of transformation and the steps related to it

Consider what is altered, removed, or given up in bringing a new form into being. How can it be done in a way that is balanced, philosophically, ecologically, and physically?

06 The body’s relationship to the object

Attend to touch, balance, movement, and physical experience alongside intellectual exploration.

07 Sensibility

Objects and the process should carry a refinement and depth that touch those who make them, use them, and see them.

08 Presence

Pieces should be able to establish their worth or present themselves without the need for explanation.

09 The symbiotic relationship of the human and object

Explore how objects carry something of their makers and users, invite engagement, and acquire meaning over time. Determine how users and the objects live together.
